Southend's Drug and Alcohol Team (DAAT)
Who are we?
There are drug and alcohol teams, or their equivalent, throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Their job is to deal with drug and alcohol issues in their local area.
Drug and Alcohol Action Teams (DAATs) bring together representatives of all the local agencies involved in tackling the misuse of drugs, including the health authority, local authority, police, probation, social services, education and youth services and the voluntary sector.
What do they do?
The DAAT's key role is to implement the national drug strategy Drugs: protecting families and communities – The 2008 drug strategy at the local level
The aims of the National Drug Strategy are:
- Protecting communities through robust enforcement to tackle drug supply, drug-related crime and anti-social behaviour;
- Preventing harm to children, young people and families affected by drug misuse;
- Delivering new approaches to drug treatment and social re-integration;
- Public information campaigns, communications and community engagement
The work of the DAAT is to take strategic decisions on cost and service delivery within the four aims. This involves commissioning services, monitoring and reporting on performance and communicating plans, activities and performance to stakeholders. The DAAT does not provide direct substance misuse treatment, For up to the minute advice please call the national drugs helpline 'Frank’ on 0800 77 66 00.
